AMERICAN RED CROSS PET FIRST AID
Objectives: The goals of this Red Cross Pet First Aid Class will primarily be:

To learn the basics of pet first aid and how to recognize and treat life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

To find out how to stabilize non-life-threatening injuries ones so that you can safely transport your pet to the veterinarian.

To become familiar with health issues and medical concerns typical of specific breeds.

To learn about the essential components to a pet first kit for your own home.
General Plan: The classes will be scheduled for a single day and will by two hours long. Once a class has been scheduled, all participants must be signed up 1 week prior to the day of class. Class size is limited only by the facility at which the class is to be taught and by the availability of hospital educators. The training room at Telford Veterinary Hospital has seating for up to 18. This class is designed for pet owners and their families, pets are not to be brought into this program. This program is extremely versatile and can be expanded to a variety of needs including disaster preparedness, fire/evacuation emergencies, ect. as the hospital has public safety educators on staff to fill these specialized needs.
Age: This program is designed for all ages of pet owners and their families. Classes will be catered to specific age groups as dictated by the needs of the overall group.
Mandatory Medical Requirements: There are no mandatory medical requirements for this program as it does not entail pets or physical activities.
General Program Outline: The following outline covers the areas of discussion in the Pet First Aid Class. Educators may, at their discrection change, add, delete or modify the content to meet the needs of the owners and participants. A detailed agenda will be provided on the day of the class outlining the instruction and recommendations for the program.

When they can’t tell you what is wrong – recognizing injuries and illness in your pet and understanding what you need to know in order to help them when it matters most.

Life threatening or just life menacing – differentiating the critical conditions from those that can wait until tomorrow and recognizing potentially life threatening situations before they become grave.

How to handle your sick pet – learn how to restrain your companion animal to keep them, and you, safe.

Lifting and moving your animals safely – learn how to appropriately lift and move your pet after an accident.

Basic wound care – simple procedures for cleaning and caring for minor wounds that don’t require a trip to the veterinarian..

CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation could save your pet's life if their heart stops beating. You can also use the Heimlich maneuver to save them from choking. Learn how to do both effectively and safely.
Cost: The charge for the course is $60.00 and includes a Red Cross Participant workbook and DVD, Red Cross Certificate of Course Completion as well as a take home Pet First Aid kit. Payment for the course must made the day of the course is scheduled to be conducted.
